HPMA Partnership Award 2018
The HPMA Excellence Awards 2018 recognise and reward outstanding work in healthcare human resource management. The Social Partnership Forum was proud to once again sponsor the partnership award, recognising great examples of partnership working between employers, trade unions and other stakeholders, in the provision of health and social care.
The 2018 awards ceremony was held on Thursday 7 June in London, at the Tower Hotel, Tower Bridge, with Gary Cookson as host and presenter for the evening. The ceremony was a real celebration of the excellent work going on in human resource management across the UK. This year the president’s award for outstanding lifetime achievement went to Dean Royles, Director of HR and OD at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, and Amanda Oates, Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust, was named HR Director of the year. Congratulations from the SPF to Dean and Amanda, and to all of this year's award winners and finalists.
The 2018 SPF partnership award went to Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust for their initiative implementation of a just and learning culture.
The award winning campaign saw trust and staff side colleagues working in partnership to improve the disciplinary process and create an open and honest culture where learning is shared. The campaign has resulted in a significant reduction in disciplinary cases and has been a key factor in improving staff morale. Staff now receive feedback when things do not go to plan, and learning is shared in a timely manner. Both staff side representatives and management recognise that the partnership approach taken paved the way for the changes.
Our SPF judges said "We were blown away by the passion of those involved in this fantastic initiative to change the workplace culture in their organisation. Across a trust with many sites, across all professional groups, providing healthcare for very varied groups of patients, it might have been seen as difficult to change what was previously considered a blaming and punitive culture. But with the energy and determination to work in partnership as employers and trade unions to establish a just and learning culture, Mersey Care has become a shining light. In a highly competitive category, this entry clearly demonstrated a positive impact on staff experience and its inextricable link with the quality of care for their patients - a truly deserving winner of our award. Huge congratulations to Mersey Care and to our three other excellent finalists."
